March 13, 2008 Foothill was away at Cal for the first track and field dual meet of the season and nearly came away with three out of four of the teams winning on the day! The young guns came out in force for the frosh-soph teams, with the distance and field event groups dominating against Cal! Both the girls and the boys beat their counterparts from the north by a substantial margin (boys by 33, girls by 29). In the varsity boys meet, Foothill fought tooth and nail, right until the end, to try to upend the Grizzlies. Foothill started the day off well by beating the Cal 4x100 relay team. The races throughout the day saw points go back and forth, with many of the races splitting points to both teams. Foothill also had a strong showing in the field events, scoring points in the triple jump (Jim Heppner) and winning the shot put and discus (Travis Hoxie) as well as the long jump (Michael Young). In the end though, Cal was able to squeak out enough points to beat the varsity boys 70-66. For the varsity girls a strong showing by the throwers, long sprinters, and distance runners was not enough to overcome a deep Cal team. The girls had several key wins on the day, including the 4x100 relay, 400 (Dani Glaeser), 3200 (Stephanie Biehl), shot put (Markelle Wilson), and sweeping the 200 (led by Dani Glaeser). Cal had a strong showing in the field events, though, and took the meet 86-50. The frosh-soph teams look to continue winning when they host the frosh-soph teams from Dougherty Valley. Because there are no varsity teams from DV varsity will have two weeks to recover and work hard before their next meet at home against Granada on April 3.
